Aloha and Welcome to Kiernan Music, home of West Hawaii's finest selection of new, used and vintage guitars and ukuleles! Our story started back in the 1970’s when Founder Brian Kiernan began his training as an instrument repairman in New York. After a couple of years in NY apprenticing with both a guitar maker and a woodwind/brass repairman, Brian moved to California where he narrowed his focus to building and repairing guitars. In the early 80’s Brian and his wife moved to Colorado, where he built a home and shop in the mountains west of Boulder, and got serious about building Archtop Guitars in the style of Robert Benedetto - Kiernan Guitars was born!

By the late 90’s Brian’s youngest son, Derek had taken a serious interest in the trade, and in 2002/2003 he built his first guitar as a Senior Project for High School. In 2004, the Kiernan’s moved to the Big Island and after 2 years of doing repairs out of their home, Brian rented a space in Captain Cook, and opened Kiernan Music in April of 2006. In the meantime Derek took a job building guitars for James Goodall, and worked in the Kiernan shop on the weekends, where father and son soon began designing and building unique ukuleles, and joined the Big Island Ukulele Guild. By 2009 the business had outgrown their small storefront/shop, and Kiernan Music moved to a larger space in Old Town Kainaliu. By 2011 James Goodall had closed up shop on the Big Island, and Derek began full time as partner in Kiernan Music. By 2016 things were really growing, so Kiernan Music expanded in place, and now features the largest most complete stringed instrument repair shop on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Now with 2 additional employees, Kiernan Music is the only authorized Dealer and Service center for Taylor Guitars on the Big Island of Hawaii!! Kiernan Music is also an authorized dealer for Godin/Seagull/LaPatrie/Art and Lutherie, Luna and Jasmine guitars.

In addition to unique and one of a kind guitars and ukueles built on the Big Island by fellow guild members, Kiernan Music is an authorized dealer for the most prestigious Hawaiian ukulele makers, including Kamaka, Kanilea, and KoAloha.
